Advancing Regional Energy Cooperation at the Special SOME 2026 in Bohol

The Special Senior Officials’ Meeting on Energy (SOME), held in Bohol, Philippines from 20–21 January 2026, brought together ASEAN Senior Officials on Energy to advance strategic dialogue on regional priorities and reinforce policy coordination across the energy sector. The meeting served as an important platform for member states to align perspectives, exchange insights, and strengthen collective responses to the evolving energy landscape.

Amid growing global energy challenges and the accelerating transition towards cleaner energy systems, discussions during the meeting underscored the importance of regional cooperation in ensuring energy resilience, security, and sustainability. ASEAN continues to position itself as a collaborative and forward-looking region, committed to addressing both current and future energy demands through integrated and strategic approaches.

During the session, ASCOPE provided key updates on the progress of the Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline (TAGP) initiative. The presentation highlighted the critical role of TAGP in enhancing cross-border gas connectivity, optimizing resource utilization, and supporting a more integrated regional gas market. As a longstanding flagship project, TAGP remains central to ASEAN’s efforts in strengthening energy security while facilitating a pragmatic transition towards lower-carbon energy systems.

ASCOPE also emphasized the need for continued collaboration among member countries, industry stakeholders, and external partners to accelerate infrastructure development and ensure the long-term viability of regional energy networks. Strengthening partnerships and fostering innovation were identified as essential enablers in navigating the complexities of the energy transition.

Overall, the discussions at the Special SOME reaffirmed ASEAN’s shared commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable energy future. Through strengthened coordination, strategic initiatives, and continued dialogue, the region aims to enhance energy connectivity and ensure that its energy systems remain adaptive and secure in the face of global uncertainties.
